U.S. Consul warns of rising marriage fraud in Dominican Republic

United States consular authorities in the Dominican Republic have reported an “alarming frequency” of fraudulent marriages being used as a means to obtain U.S. residency. William Swaney, the U.S. Consul in the Dominican Republic, noted that while these fraudulent cases represent a small proportion of the total volume of applications, their prevalence has prompted intensified scrutiny and deeper investigations.

Swaney, who has been working in the Dominican Republic since 1997, stated that this issue is not new but remains a persistent challenge. He highlighted the difficulty in identifying and resolving these cases, as they require extensive time to gather and analyze evidence to determine if a marriage is genuine or a sham intended to facilitate migration. To combat this, the consulate utilizes a specialized anti-fraud unit to investigate irregularities.
