US Consulate Opening in Greenland’s Nuuk Draws Hundreds of Protesters

Hundreds of demonstrators gathered in Nuuk as the United States inaugurated a new consular building, turning their backs on the façade and chanting slogans such as “Greenland belongs to Greenlanders” and “Greenland is not for sale.” Protesters displayed the Greenlandic flag and anti‑US placards, accusing Washington of seeking to claim the strategically important Arctic island.

The ceremony, attended by U.S. Ambassador to Denmark Kenneth Howery, was notably absent of Greenland’s prime minister Jens Frederik Nielsen and other local officials. Police estimates placed participation at over 500 people, and the municipal mayor handed a protest note to the ambassador on behalf of residents. The new consulate replaces a small wooden outpost with a larger office in the city centre.

The protest reflects lingering concerns over former President Donald Trump’s comments that Greenland’s location is vital for U.S. security against Russia and China, and it underscores broader Arctic sovereignty sensitivities involving Denmark, which retains sovereignty over the autonomous territory.
