Ian Brinksman arrested for allegedly leaking classified defense information

The FBI has arrested Ian Brinksman, a 42-year-old government contractor, for the alleged unlawful transmission of national defense information. Brinksman, who held a Top Secret security clearance with access to Sensitive Compartmented Information (SCI), was taken into custody following a search of his Washington, D.C., residence.

Federal prosecutors allege that Brinksman used his position to access classified intelligence reports that were unrelated to his official duties. He is accused of passing this information to a romantic partner, identified in court documents as ‘Individual 1,’ who publishes a newsletter on the Substack platform. Investigators cited phone records, database access logs, and email communications as evidence of a pattern of unauthorized disclosures.

While the criminal complaint refers to the recipient only as ‘Individual 1,’ investigative reports and fundraising articles from the Capital & Empire newsletter suggest the individual may be journalist Aída Chávez. CIA Director John Ratcliffe confirmed the agency referred the matter to the FBI for investigation.
