U.S. Corsair fighter wreckage found off Yangyang coast
The wreckage of a U.S. F-4U Corsair fighter plane, lost during the Korean War, has been discovered off the coast of Yangyang, South Korea. The debris was located at a depth of 45 meters after being spotted by a local scuba diver last May.
Following the initial discovery, the South Korean Ministry of National Defense and the U.S. Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA) deployed underwater drones to confirm the site. The wreckage, which includes parts of the propeller and wings, is believed to be the aircraft that disappeared on February 21, 1952, while escorting a damaged plane during a blizzard.
A joint investigation team is now preparing for underwater excavations to recover human remains and personal effects. The DPAA intends to use DNA analysis to identify the pilot and return them to their family.
