In Washington state, a Democrat-led legislature passed a law, signed by Governor Bob Ferguson, that subjects elected sheriffs to oversight by a committee tasked with determining if a sheriff is ‘qualified.’ Additionally, in King County, measures implemented during the 2020 period have reportedly altered the independence of the sheriff, requiring coordination with county executives regarding staffing, pay, and cooperation with federal agencies such as the FBI and ICE.

Critics argue that funding from figures like George Soros has targeted various local offices, including district attorneys and secretaries of state, to shift law enforcement and incarceration policies.
