US court blocks federal demand for 17 million drivers' data
A US federal judge has issued a temporary restraining order blocking the federal government from accessing a database containing sensitive personal information of approximately 17 million commercial drivers. The requested data from the Commercial Driver’s License Information System (CDLIS) includes names, dates of birth, license numbers, and Social Security numbers.
The legal challenge was led by Virginia Attorney General Jay Jones and a coalition of state attorneys general against the US Department of Transportation, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, and the Department of Homeland Security. The states argue the federal government lacks the authority to demand such vast amounts of sensitive data and that the move threatens privacy protections.
The court order also prevents the administration from withholding more than $10 million in federal funding from the American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators, which has managed the system since 1988. While the federal government maintains the access is necessary for enforcement regarding driver eligibility, the ruling ensures state control over the data remains in place while litigation continues.
