Bola Tinubu legal battle over FBI files faces August 2026 deadline

A U.S. federal judge has set a deadline of August 21, 2026, for the release of records related to allegations of drug trafficking involving Nigerian President Bola Tinubu. U.S. District Judge Beryl Howell denied a request for a 10-day extension, granting only four additional days to comply with the order.

The legal proceedings stem from a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) lawsuit seeking files held by the Department of Justice, the FBI, and the DEA. The records pertain to a 1993 civil forfeiture case in Illinois involving bank accounts associated with Tinubu during the 1990s. Tinubu has denied any criminal wrongdoing, noting the case concluded in a settlement without indictment.

Tinubu’s legal team had filed a notice of joinder to align their response schedule with the U.S. government’s request for more time. However, the lobbying firm Von Batten-Montague-York, representing former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, alleged that the request for delay was an attempt to use diplomatic channels to influence U.S. officials and protect bilateral relations.
