US crime statistics show conflicting data on violence and safety

Discrepancies exist between different statistical measures of crime in the United States. While FBI data indicates that reported violent crimes are at record lows, the US Department of Justice’s National Crime Victimization Survey shows that rates of violence are at record highs.

Public perception also reflects a disconnect; although many Americans report that neighborhood crime has not worsened, Gallup data indicates that fear of crime remains a significant concern. Furthermore, a survey by Tri State Gate found that while nearly 70% of Americans believe neighborhood crime is not increasing, only 28% feel genuinely safe inside their own homes.

Regional data highlights specific challenges, such as Durham, where violent crime—including homicide, rape, robbery, and aggravated assault—increased by 4.6% in the first quarter of 2026 compared to the previous year. Additionally, Tennessee has been cited in reports regarding high violent crime rates and quality of life concerns.
