France unrest: Trump blames immigration and calls for border closures
Massive protests across France, driven by concerns over the cost of living and educational funding, have escalated into widespread violence, looting, and arson. Major cities including Paris, Marseille, Lyon, Bordeaux, and Limoges have reported significant damage, including an arson attack on the Limoges city hall.
French authorities report that between 550,000 and 800,000 people participated in the demonstrations. The unrest has resulted in approximately 1,800 to 2,500 arrests and left over 500 police officers, gendarmes, and firefighters injured. In Paris alone, police recorded 855 arrests.
U.S. President Donald Trump responded to the situation via Truth Social, attributing the chaos to immigration and calling on French authorities to close their borders to regain control. He described the country as being “in flames” due to the arrival of people from “a completely different world.”
In response to the violence, French Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu has ordered local curfews in several areas, including parts of Paris, Nice, and northern cities, to prevent further looting and protect public and private property.
