US Defense adds Chinese clean‑energy and tech firms to military‑linked blacklist

The U.S. Department of Defense has placed eight Chinese clean‑energy companies, including JA Solar and Trina Solar, on its list of designated "Chinese military companies." The designation triggers restrictions on U.S. defense contracts beginning June 30, 2026 and a broader goods‑and‑services prohibition effective June 30, 2027.

In the same announcement, the Pentagon added major Chinese firms such as Alibaba, BYD, Baidu, Nio and aircraft maker Comac to the list, bringing the total to 188 companies flagged as national‑security risks. Inclusion does not constitute immediate sanctions but warns U.S. entities against doing business with the firms. China’s embassy called the move discriminatory, and analysts noted the risk of retaliatory sanctions or diplomatic push‑back.
