US defense firms RTX and Raytheon advance air‑defense systems
RTX Corp announced progress in the Next Generation Short‑Range Interceptor (NGSRI) program for the U.S. Department of Defense. Tests have validated the missile’s launch module, target detection and tracking, and the warhead’s ability to neutralise aerial targets. Northrop Grumman supplies the propulsion system, and the effort aims to replace the aging Stinger family, with a potential procure‑ment of about 10,000 new missiles. Evaluation of competing designs, including Lockheed Martin’s offering, is scheduled for 2028. Existing Stinger stocks, many of which have been sent to Ukraine, are now limited to upgrades and refurbishment.
Raytheon reported that it is preparing to restart production of the Miniature Air‑Launched Decoy (MALD) system. The updated design will retain electronic‑jamming capability and incorporate a modular front end that could later accommodate kinetic warheads. If a contract is signed, the first units could be delivered within two years. The move responds to growing demand from U.S. forces and NATO allies for affordable, mass‑produced systems capable of overwhelming advanced air‑defence networks. Raytheon's Tucson facility maintains a warm production line, and the MALD has previously seen combat use in Ukraine and the Middle East.
