U.S. defense industry ramps up missile production to replenish depleted stocks

The United States defense industry is racing to replenish depleted munitions stocks following military operations involving Iran and the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Major contractors are investing billions of dollars to expand production capacity, though experts warn that new manufacturing lines may not meet immediate demand.

In Tucson, Arizona, RTX is operating 24/7 to increase the production of Tomahawk missiles and other precision munitions. Meanwhile, Lockheed Martin is hiring hundreds of workers in Arkansas to triple the production of Patriot PAC-3 MSE interceptor missiles. Other major players, including Boeing, L3Harris, and Northrop Grumman, are constructing new facilities to manufacture critical components such as rocket motors and electronics.

Despite these efforts, the rapid consumption of modern munitions in recent conflicts has outpaced industrial scaling. Former NATO Military Committee Chairman Rob Bauer noted the disconnect between defense budgets and availability, stating, “Defense ministers have deep pockets — they go to the store, but they find empty shelves.”
