US defense officials visit Ghana for security talks

Senior United States defense officials visited Ghana from August 6 to 8 to conduct high-level talks regarding security cooperation. The delegation included Assistant Secretary of the Army Daniel Zimmerman and U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM) Deputy Commander Lieutenant General John Brennan.

Discussions focused on strengthening Ghana’s domestic, maritime, border, and regional security capabilities. The engagement is part of a broader series of security interactions between the U.S. and Ghana this year, following previous visits by the AFRICOM Commander and the Commander of U.S. Naval Forces Europe-Africa.

U.S. Chargé d’Affaires Rolf Olson noted that the robust cooperation includes co-hosting African land and maritime forces summits, participating in joint training exercises, and enhancing partner capacity through medical and educational exchanges. Additionally, the U.S. Embassy hosted delegations from the Naval Medical Research Unit and the Africa Center for Strategic Studies to bolster medical readiness and military education.
