U.S. defense sector pivots toward naval modernization and AI shipbuilding

The U.S. Department of Defense is intensifying its focus on maritime readiness, prioritizing the modernization and sustainment of its existing fleet due to geopolitical tensions in the South China Sea and the Strait of Hormuz. This shift toward rapid fleet modernization and maintenance, repair, and overhaul services is expected to create long-term revenue streams for defense contractors.

HII, the largest military shipbuilder in the United States, is aiming for a 15% increase in shipyard throughput this year to accelerate deliveries to the U.S. Navy. The company's strategy involves workforce expansion, infrastructure upgrades, and the integration of physical AI to automate production and inspection processes. HII currently has approximately 40 ships under construction or modernization at its Ingalls and Newport News facilities.
