US delegation meets Syrian President Ahmed al‑Shara in Ankara
Syrian President Ahmed al‑Shara arrived in Ankara to attend the NATO summit and was hosted by a United States congressional delegation that included Senators Jeanne Shaheen, Chris Coons, Mike Rounds, Dick Durbin, Lindsey Graham and Representative Michael Turner. The group met with U.S. officials, including the U.S. ambassador to Turkey and special envoy Tom Barrack, before the president’s scheduled talks with President Donald Trump.
During a joint press conference, Trump praised al‑Shara, claiming he would be removed from terrorism lists and praised Syria’s stability, while also commenting on Israel, Iran, and global oil markets. The statements covered a range of topics, from U.S. support for Israel and plans for Iranian nuclear discussions to assertions about oil price reductions and economic investment.
