Brad Lander detained by Israeli forces in West Bank

Brad Lander, the Democratic nominee for New York’s 10th Congressional District, was detained by Israeli forces in the occupied West Bank on Wednesday. The incident occurred near the village of Nahalin, south of Bethlehem, while Lander was participating in an olive harvest alongside Palestinian farmers and a group of international volunteers.

The group, which included approximately 80 to 90 volunteers such as American and Israeli rabbis and human rights activists, was intercepted by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF). Military authorities declared the area a closed military zone, stating the harvest was conducted without the required prior coordination and posed a security risk to nearby Israeli communities. The IDF further characterized the arrival of the activists as an act intended to provoke.

Lander was released from custody several hours later after his identity as a congressional candidate was recognized, though he was reportedly issued a warning. While Lander and some participants were freed, dozens of other volunteers, including several Israeli citizens, remained in custody or faced multi-week bans from entering the West Bank. Lander described the detention as an attempt to undermine Palestinian rights, while the Israeli Foreign Ministry labeled the incident a “calculated political stunt.”
