Democratic Socialists of America Call for Senate Abolition and Expanded Voting Rights

The Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) released a new platform titled “Workers Deserve More” ahead of the November midterm elections. The plan calls for sweeping changes to the U.S. political system, including abolishing the Senate and replacing it with a single‑chamber Congress, expanding the House, and rewriting the Constitution. It also proposes replacing the Electoral College with a national popular vote, extending voting rights to non‑citizens and people with criminal convictions, and moving toward a multiparty system.

Additional policy proposals include universal Medicare, a 32‑hour work week with full pay, cancellation of student‑loan debt, universal rent control, defunding the Department of Defense, and granting amnesty and free migration for all immigrants. DSA co‑chair Ashik Siddique said, “We just don’t see the point of the Senate… it’s not extreme, it would make the country more democratic.” Critics have labeled the platform “anti‑American” and warned it would undermine the constitutional balance of powers.

The platform reflects DSA’s growing influence after recent primary victories in several states and is intended to shape the party’s agenda for the upcoming elections.
