US Democratic Socialists Gain Momentum Ahead of 2024 Elections

The Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) are increasingly influencing the Democratic Party as the 2024 congressional elections approach. Progressive candidates such as Abdul El‑Sayed, a Detroit‑born epidemiologist, have won key primaries in Michigan, and New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani has been highlighted in national media for his left‑leaning platform.

The DSA agenda emphasizes higher taxes on the wealthy, expanded rent controls, universal health care, student debt relief and public ownership of major infrastructure. While the movement attracts younger, urban voters facing high housing costs and economic inequality, party leaders worry that a surge in progressive victories could alienate centrist voters and jeopardize the Democrats' overall electoral prospects.
