US Democrats demand explanations from Marco Rubio regarding Flávio Bolsonaro

A group of 25 Democratic members of the US House of Representatives has sent a formal letter to Secretary of State Marco Rubio demanding clarity on the Trump administration’s potential role in facilitating the travel of Brazilian Senator Flávio Bolsonaro to the United States.

The inquiry follows reports that Bolsonaro fled Brazil after his presidential election defeat, bypassing a Brazilian Supreme Court order that required the surrender of his passport and restricted his international travel. The lawmakers, led by Representatives Sydney Kamlager-Dove and Dina Titus, have submitted 15 specific questions regarding the issuance of US visas for the senator and his family, as well as whether US diplomatic resources or officials in Argentina or Ecuador coordinated his itinerary.

Questions also focus on whether the State Department or the US Embassy in Brazil had prior knowledge of the judicial restrictions in Brazil. The group cited reports, including from The New York Times, alleging that White House advisor Jason Miller helped arrange a private jet to transport the senator from Argentina to Miami. The Democrats have requested a written response by November 13 and a briefing with congressional officials.
