US Democrats demand probe into Ambassador Kimberly Guilfoyle
Leading Democrats in the U.S. Senate and House have called for an investigation into the conduct of Kimberly Guilfoyle, the U.S. Ambassador to Greece. The calls follow a Wall Street Journal report alleging that Guilfoyle used her official position to promote natural gas agreements for a Greek company, Aktor Group, across Southeast Europe.
Senator Jeanne Shaheen and Representative Gregory Meeks have written to Secretary of State Marco Rubio, expressing concerns over the potential for conflicts of interest and the inappropriate involvement of a lobbyist in diplomatic meetings. Meeks stated that if the allegations are confirmed, Guilfoyle should be removed from her position.
The controversy also involves allegations regarding political interference. Reports suggest that during a dinner in Athens, Guilfoyle commented that the United States could facilitate political changes in countries such as Greece and Romania. While Romanian officials expressed concern over potential American intervention in domestic politics, the U.S. Ambassador to Romania affirmed confidence in Romania's democracy.
In Greece, Environment and Energy Minister Stavros Papastavrou denied the reports of any pressure or threats against the country, asserting that Greek decisions are made solely in the national interest and that U.S.-Greece relations remain at a historic high.
