US demographic shifts pose challenges for Republican strongholds

An analysis by The Economist suggests that the MAGA movement and the Republican Party face significant demographic challenges in the United States. While previous projections for the 2030 census suggested population growth might favor red states, new data indicates a historical trend reversal.

In traditionally Republican counties, the number of deaths has exceeded the number of births for the first time since at least 1982. This shift is compounded by a nationwide decline in birth rates; between July 2023 and July 2024, only 3.6 million babies were born, the lowest figure in over 40 years.

Additionally, rural areas have seen significant out-migration, losing approximately 700,000 more people to relocation than to inward migration between 2000 and 2020, often involving individuals of working age. These factors combined suggest that the demographic outlook for Republican-leaning areas may be more precarious than previously assumed.
