US, Denmark, and Greenland sign Arctic defense pact

The United States, Denmark, and Greenland have signed a new defense agreement at the United Nations to update a 1951 pact and expand security cooperation in the Arctic region. The agreement aims to strengthen military infrastructure and bolster deterrence in the North Atlantic, a strategically vital area facing increasing competition from Russia.

During the signing ceremony, U.S. President Donald Trump described the deal as a long-awaited milestone that would strengthen ties between the three parties. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen stated the pact is intended to prevent adversaries from gaining significant influence or control in Greenland while reinforcing NATO during a period of heightened geopolitical tension. The agreement maintains Greenlandic autonomy and respects the territorial integrity of the Kingdom of Denmark.
