United States President Donald Trump, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, and Greenlandic Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen signed a trilateral security agreement in New York on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly. The pact, which updates a 1951 defense agreement, aims to bolster Arctic security and expand the U.S. military presence in the region.

Under the new terms, the United States is authorized to establish two new military defense areas in Narsarsuaq and Mestersvig, while also modernizing and expanding the Pituffik Space Base. The agreement grants U.S. aircraft and vessels broad access to Greenlandic territory and waters. To counter regional adversaries, the deal prohibits non-NATO and non-EU countries from establishing military bases or making sensitive investments in Greenland without express U.S. approval.

Crucially, the agreement reaffirms the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Kingdom of Denmark and recognizes Greenland’s right to self-determination. The pact remains applicable even if Greenland chooses independence in the future, provided the new state remains part of the NATO alliance. The agreement must now undergo parliamentary ratification in both Copenhagen and Nuuk.
