Quantinuum secures $100M CHIPS award for quantum manufacturing
Quantinuum has finalized an agreement with the U.S. Department of Commerce to receive $100 million in federal funding through the CHIPS and Science Act. The award is intended to support research and domestic manufacturing for the company’s trapped-ion quantum computers, specifically focusing on developing the infrastructure required for large-scale, fault-tolerant systems.
To expand the U.S. quantum supply chain, Quantinuum is partnering with GlobalFoundries to manufacture next-generation ion traps and control electronics, with a specific focus on utilizing 300mm wafer technology for high-volume production. Additionally, the company will collaborate with Monarch Quantum to develop and manufacture the highly precise laser and optical components necessary for controlling quantum states.
In a broader push for quantum leadership, the U.S. Department of Commerce has also allocated significant funding to other industry players. GlobalFoundries is eligible for up to $375 million in R&D support, while companies including Rigetti Computing and D-Wave Quantum have also secured $100 million each to address technical challenges in scaling quantum computing technologies.
