Pentagon expands GenAI.mil portal with ChatGPT Mil and Grok

The U.S. Department of Defense has expanded its GenAI.mil secure portal by integrating two new generative artificial intelligence tools: ChatGPT Mil from OpenAI and Grok for Government from Starshield AI. The platform, which previously offered Google Gemini, is designed to provide military and civilian personnel with access to frontier AI models within a secure government environment.

Both new tools are accredited for Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI) at Impact Level 5 (IL5). ChatGPT Mil is tailored for document-heavy, non-classified tasks such as administration, logistics, planning, and policy drafting. Grok for Government, provided via SpaceX’s Starshield AI, offers capabilities including deep-thinking inference, adaptive reasoning, and customizable workspaces to support operational needs like supply chain management and market research.

As of late August 2026, the GenAI.mil portal has reached over 1.7 million unique users out of a total of 3 million Department of Defense personnel. The deployment ensures that data processed through the portal remains isolated and is not used to train commercial AI models. Notably, Anthropic’s Claude remains absent from the portal following disputes regarding security guardrails and a previous supply-chain-risk designation by the administration.
