U.S. Department of Education announces $174 million for HBCUs

The U.S. Department of Education has announced an additional $174 million in one-time funding for Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) for fiscal year 2026. This investment, announced by Secretary of Education Linda McMahon, exceeds the amount previously approved by Congress.

When combined with the $406 million passed by Congress, the administration's total support for HBCUs across fiscal years 2025 and 2026 reaches a cumulative $612 million above the congressionally approved level. This follows a previous $435 million investment made in September 2025.

Dr. Michael L. Lomax, president and CEO of UNCF, commended the administration for prioritizing these institutions, noting that the needs on HBCU campuses remain severe. In addition to the HBCU support, the Department of Education will provide more than $61 million in one-time funding for Tribally Controlled Colleges and Universities.
