U.S. Department of Education launches simplified FAFSA form early

The U.S. Department of Education has launched the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) earlier than the mandated October 1 deadline. This early rollout aims to assist families in planning for the 2027-2028 school year amid rising college costs.

Officials describe this as the simplest version of the form to date. Under Secretary for Higher Education Nicholas Kent stated that the application now takes an average of 15 minutes to complete. Key improvements include the removal of confusing jargon and a new feature allowing students to invite contributors via text or email.

Secretary of Education Linda McMahon noted the redesign was intended to prioritize the needs of students and families. The move follows the FAFSA Simplification Act of 2020, which sought to expand access to federal aid, including Pell Grants.
