U.S. Department of Energy designates helium as a critical material

The United States Department of Energy (DOE) has officially designated helium as a critical material under the Energy Act of 2020. U.S. Energy Secretary Chris Wright stated the decision aims to mitigate reliance on imports, bolster domestic production, and secure materials essential for economic and national security.

Helium is considered indispensable for several high-tech sectors, including semiconductor manufacturing, quantum computing, super intelligence, and medical/scientific applications. The DOE noted that helium is non-substitutable for critical energy functions and is vital for the advancement of data center supply chains.

The designation comes amid global supply chain uncertainties. Major suppliers have recently implemented restrictions, including China, which issued a temporary export ban to secure its domestic market, and Russia, which tightened export controls through the end of 2027. The U.S. seeks to leverage its large natural gas reserves, which contain helium, to increase domestic output and address growing global demand.
