U.S. Department of Energy funds major grid infrastructure upgrades
The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has allocated significant federal funding toward upgrading electrical transmission infrastructure through its Grid Resilience and Innovation Partnerships (GRIP) program. Under the Speed to Power through Accelerated Reconductoring and other Key Advanced Transmission Technology Upgrades (SPARK) initiative, multiple entities are receiving grants to modernize existing lines.
PPL Electric Utilities was selected to receive up to $71.5 million to modernize 29.3 miles of 230-kilovolt transmission infrastructure in Pennsylvania. This project, known as the Montour Grid Resilience and Advanced Reconductoring Project, aims to increase capacity and reliability along the aging Montour corridor to meet rising energy demands in the Susquehanna Valley, Greater Lehigh Valley, and Northeast Pennsylvania.
Additionally, electric cooperatives have secured more than $200 million in funding. A consortium including the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association (NRECA) and Basin Electric Power Cooperative will receive $87 million for the Unified Vision for Energy Resilience project, spanning Arkansas, Florida, Missouri, Mississippi, North Dakota, and Wisconsin. Another six cooperatives were awarded $145 million in separate SPARK grants to improve grid reliability and capacity.
