U.S. Department of Energy launches battery manufacturing consortium

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has established the Battery Manufacturing (BattMan) Accelerator, a national consortium designed to transition energy storage innovations from laboratory discovery to domestic industrial production. The initiative involves a collaboration between Argonne National Laboratory, Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL), Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), and the National Laboratory of the Rockies (NLR).

The consortium aims to strengthen U.S. leadership in advanced energy storage by addressing challenges in scaling emerging technologies, reducing manufacturing costs, and shortening development timelines. Each participating laboratory will provide specific expertise: PNNL will focus on manufacturing science and scalability, Argonne will validate feasibility through pilot lines, ORNL will develop smart coating processes, and NLR will lead digital materials design and quality control integration.
