U.S. Department of Energy offers $4.2B for nuclear plant upgrades

The U.S. Department of Energy has offered up to $4.2 billion in conditional financing to modernize and upgrade three nuclear power plants operated by Vistra. The upgrades target the Beaver Valley plant in Pennsylvania and the Davis-Besse and Perry plants in Ohio.

These projects aim to increase generating capacity by 433 megawatts through reactor uprates, which allow existing facilities to safely produce more electricity without new construction. The initiative is intended to meet rising electricity demand within the PJM Interconnection grid, which serves over 67 million people across 13 states and Washington, D.C.

In addition to increasing capacity, the investments are expected to extend the operational life of these plants by approximately 20 years beyond their current licenses. The financing package also includes an option for potential future uprates at Vistra’s Comanche Peak Nuclear Power Plant in Texas.
