U.S. Department of Energy releases 4 million barrels of oil due to Hurricane Isaias

The U.S. Department of Energy has authorized an emergency exchange of up to 4 million barrels of crude oil from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR) to mitigate supply disruptions caused by Hurricane Isaias.

As of recent reports, Hurricane Isaias has significantly impacted energy production in the Gulf of Mexico, halting approximately 69 percent of crude oil production and 57 percent of natural gas production in the region. This disruption affects an estimated 1.5 million barrels of daily oil production and 1.3 billion cubic feet of daily natural gas. Additionally, workers have been evacuated from 113 production platforms, representing about 30 percent of active platforms in the area.

Under the emergency plan, ExxonMobil and BP America are each authorized to receive up to 2 million barrels of crude oil to ensure the continuity of refinery operations. These companies are required to replenish the SPR by 2027, returning the original amount plus an additional surplus.
