U.S. Department of Energy announces $5.25 billion for power grid upgrades
The U.S. Department of Energy has announced a major initiative to modernize the nation's aging power grid, aimed at meeting skyrocketing electricity demand driven by artificial intelligence and data centers. Through the Speed to Power (SPARK) initiative, the department is investing nearly $2 billion in federal funding, which, combined with $3.35 billion in recipient cost-sharing, brings the total project investment to $5.25 billion.
The program supports 31 projects across 26 states. These efforts are expected to unlock more than 23 gigawatts of additional electricity capacity—enough to power approximately 16 million homes—and improve reliability for roughly 100 million Americans. Key technical strategies include reconductoring or rebuilding over 1,500 miles of transmission lines and deploying grid-enhancing technologies across nearly 21,000 miles. These upgrades will utilize advanced sensors to monitor real-time weather and conditions to ensure safe and efficient power transmission.
Specific regional investments include $250 million for a project connecting the Colorado and Texas grids, which aims to increase capacity from 210 to 700 megawatts. Additionally, Duke Energy will receive $50 million for transmission improvements in the Carolinas, and CenterPoint Energy has been awarded $50 million for a project in Houston designed to enhance grid awareness and response capabilities.
