US Department of Energy to loan heating oil from emergency reserve
The US Department of Energy has announced plans to loan approximately 315,000 barrels from the 1-million-barrel Northeast Home Heating Oil Reserve to combat surging fuel prices. The move aims to address rising costs for diesel and heating oil, which have reached record highs amid disruptions caused by the war in Iran.
Deliveries from the reserve, which is located at sites in New Jersey, Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Maine, are scheduled to be completed by November 13. Energy Secretary Chris Wright described the action as a “temporary measure to solve a temporary supply disruption.” The department will utilize a competitive bidding process for fuel retailers and terminal holders to ensure supply reaches areas facing shortages.
Heating oil is a critical resource for many households, particularly in New England, where it is used by about one-third of homes. The timing of the release is significant as the country approaches the November 3 midterm elections, with high energy costs being a central issue in several competitive Senate races.
