US Department of Health and Human Services updates Alzheimer strategy
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has introduced a restructured national plan to combat Alzheimer's and related dementias. Moving from six previous focus areas, the updated strategy consolidates its efforts into four core pillars: lifelong risk reduction through prevention, prioritized research and innovation, improved and standardized clinical and nursing care, and evidence-based support for patients and caregivers.
To support these objectives, the FDA has launched the ‘Alzheimer’s Prevention Accelerator’ to expedite the transition of preventative approaches from research to clinical practice. Additionally, the research agency ARPA-H is allocating up to $48.8 million toward early detection projects, bringing its total funding for Alzheimer's research to approximately $155.3 million.
The new framework is part of a ten-year National Alzheimer's Plan spanning 2026 to 2035, intended to succeed the previous NAPA initiative. HHS plans to conduct structured reviews of the implementation, with a progress report scheduled for the 2027 annual update.
