U.S. Department of Justice announces election crime cases in seven states

The U.S. Department of Justice has announced charges and guilty pleas involving 12 individuals in connection with election-related crimes across seven states: Florida, Kansas, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Texas, Hawaii, and Utah. The cases involve allegations of illegal voting by noncitizens, fraudulent voter registration, false claims of U.S. citizenship, and the destruction of election mail.

In Utah, former postal carrier Damon Matai Seei was charged with the unlawful destruction and delay of mail, including approximately 300 mail-in ballots intended for the June 2026 primary election. In Florida, a Canadian national was charged with voting in three federal elections despite allegedly knowing she was not a U.S. citizen. In Kansas, a Nigerian lawful permanent resident was charged with falsely claiming citizenship to register and vote.

In New Jersey, two noncitizens, Patrick Terrence Reid and Danubis Bernat, were charged with illegal voting and making false statements on citizenship applications. This follows reports of roughly 6,600 noncitizens being registered to vote in the state, which Governor Mikie Sherrill attributed to a software error occurring between June 2023 and June 2024.
