U.S. Department of Justice expands election monitoring and voting crime prosecutions
The U.S. Department of Justice has initiated a significant federal enforcement push regarding election-related offenses, charging 28 individuals with voting crimes. This action reflects an intensified focus on prosecuting noncitizen voting and other electoral violations.
In a separate but related development, the DOJ has begun notifying specific counties of its intent to monitor them on Election Day. Jurisdictions in Colorado, Florida, Minnesota, Texas, and Washington have already received notifications. Harmeet Dhillon, head of the DOJ's Civil Rights Division, stated the department plans to deploy 1,000 observers nationwide, describing it as 'the largest monitoring effort' in the department's history.
While the DOJ routinely observes elections, local officials and experts have expressed concerns regarding the scale and intent of this year's monitoring. Some officials have questioned why their specific localities were selected, amid broader debates over federal oversight of state and local election processes.
