US Department of Justice exposes AI-driven student aid fraud scheme
The US Department of Justice has announced charges against five individuals in connection with Operation Ghostbusters, a nationwide investigation into a multimillion-dollar student financial aid fraud scheme. The operation involved using stolen American identities to create fraudulent applications through the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) system.
According to authorities, fraudsters utilized artificial intelligence to maintain these fake enrollments. The technology was reportedly used to complete required coursework and even create the appearance of fictitious students participating in online classrooms to trick institutions into believing real people were present. This allowed the fake accounts to remain active for multiple semesters, maximizing the theft of taxpayer-funded aid.
Investigators have linked Kenyan nationals to the scheme, alleging that some of the stolen funds were transferred to associates in Kenya. The Department of Justice has confirmed the seizure of more than $750,000 as part of the ongoing investigation.
