White House blocks Politico from Air Force One amid press access lawsuit

The White House has blocked Politico from boarding Air Force One, preventing the outlet from fulfilling its duties as a print representative for the presidential travel pool. This move follows previous restrictions placed on CNN and MS NOW. Although a federal judge, Timothy Kelly, recently issued a temporary restraining order requiring the administration to reinstate press passes for these outlets, the administration has continued to exclude them from specific travel assignments.

The Department of Justice has filed a motion to restore the ban, arguing that the news organizations have published information that harms national security. Conversely, the media outlets have filed a lawsuit alleging that the administration's actions violate their First and Fifth Amendment rights. The White House maintains that its decisions regarding privileged access to spaces like Air Force One are within presidential authority and are distinct from general White House grounds access.

A court hearing is scheduled for Thursday to determine whether a preliminary injunction should be granted to protect press access while the legal challenge proceeds.
