Department of Justice sues California over 20,000 suspected noncitizen voters

The U.S. Department of Justice has filed a federal lawsuit against California to prevent the counting of mail-in ballots from approximately 20,000 voters whom the administration alleges are likely noncitizens. The legal action, filed in Los Angeles, targets California Secretary of State Shirley Weber and Los Angeles County Registrar Dean Logan.

The dispute escalated after the DOJ provided a password-protected USB drive containing the names of the suspected individuals, demanding that state officials review the list and segregate the ballots within 48 hours. California officials declined to access the device, citing data privacy and security protocols, and stated that the federal government has provided no evidence to prove the identified voters are not citizens.

Acting Deputy Attorney General Trent McCotter issued a warning that election officials who knowingly process and tabulate ballots from these suspected noncitizens could face criminal investigation and prosecution as aiders and abettors to a federal crime. The Trump administration maintains that noncitizen voting is illegal and requires immediate verification, while California leaders have characterized the demands as an attempt to interfere with state elections and cause chaos.
