U.S. Department of State backs Great Sea Interconnector project

The U.S. Department of State has expressed support for energy security and cooperation in the Eastern Mediterranean, specifically regarding the Great Sea Interconnector (GSI) project. This follows a bipartisan intervention by members of Congress who sent a letter to Secretary of State Marco Rubio and the head of the U.S. International Development Finance Corporation (DFC).

The lawmakers are urging the administration to prioritize the electrical interconnection project linking Greece, Cyprus, and Israel. They have linked the GSI to the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC) and broader U.S. strategic interests in the region. The State Department noted that the administration remains committed to strengthening critical energy partnerships to enhance global energy security and ensure energy sufficiency for the United States and its partners.

This diplomatic development follows the August 5 agreement in which the French investment group Meridiam entered as a majority shareholder in the company established to implement and finance the Great Sea Interconnector project.
