Nikos Maziotis barred from entering U.S. after prison release

Nikos Maziotis, a leading member of the Greek far-left militant group Revolutionary Struggle, has been released from prison after serving a 20-year sentence. Maziotis spent 14 years in custody and six years working within the prison system.

Following his release, the U.S. Department of State announced that Maziotis is barred from entering the United States. This decision is part of a new visa restriction policy announced by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, which targets foreign nationals who participate in or support far-left terrorist organizations.

The U.S. government characterizes Maziotis as a leader of a group that conducted a sustained campaign of violence against both Greek and American targets, including a 2007 rocket attack on the U.S. Embassy in Athens. This entry ban is a separate measure from the sanctions already imposed on him in 2015, when he was designated a ‘Specially Designated Global Terrorist,’ a status that allows for the freezing of assets and prohibits transactions with U.S. citizens.

U.S. Ambassador to Greece Kimberly Guilfoyle condemned the release of Maziotis, stating that his actions deserve ‘complete and unequivocal condemnation’ and that such individuals have no place in a civilized society.
