U.S. Department of State post triggers ‘vampetaço’ digital protest in Brazil
Brazilian social media users launched a digital protest known as the ‘vampetaço’ following a publication by the U.S. Department of State. The U.S. post defended the Monroe Doctrine and asserted American hegemony in the Western Hemisphere, stating that American dominance in the region ‘will never be questioned again.’
In response, Brazilian users flooded social media platforms, particularly X, with memes featuring images from a nude photo shoot of former footballer Vampeta. These images were paired with slogans such as ‘Brasil soberano’ (Sovereign Brazil) and ‘Doutrina Vampeta neles’ (Vampeta Doctrine on them).
Some protesters used the movement to promote the BRICS bloc as a geopolitical alternative to U.S. influence. Other participants directed personal attacks toward Donald Trump, referencing his alleged connections to Jeffrey Epstein.
