U.S. Department of Transportation awards $233M for transit accessibility

The Federal Transit Administration (FTA) has awarded approximately $233 million in grants through the All Stations Accessibility Program (ASAP) to improve transit accessibility across eight projects in five U.S. states. The funding, part of the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, aims to ensure transit stations are fully compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA) will receive the largest portion, $80 million, to upgrade trolley stations in Philadelphia with new elevators and raised platforms. These improvements will serve high-traffic areas, including the City Center Trolley Tunnel, which connects over 60,000 daily riders to major employment centers.

Other major allocations include $68.19 million for Metra in Illinois to rehabilitate stations at Hubbard Woods, Olympia Fields, and Pullman National Historical Park. The Maryland Transit Administration was awarded $48.06 million for upgrades at Martin State Airport and Metropolitan Grove MARC stations. Additionally, the Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority will receive $20 million to complete accessibility improvements on seven Green Line stations.
