U.S. Department of Transportation awards federal grants to Indiana and Hawaii ports

The U.S. Department of Transportation has awarded significant federal grants through the Port Infrastructure Development Program to modernize maritime facilities in Indiana and Hawaii.

Ports of Indiana-Burns Harbor received $11.2 million to support the Burns Harbor Container Handling Modernization Project. This $14 million initiative, which includes $2.8 million from Ports of Indiana, will fund the purchase of mobile harbor cranes, reach stackers, and off-road yard trucks. The upgrades aim to modernize cargo handling and prepare the facility for potential international container services, supporting steel, bulk, and construction materials.

The Port of Kahului in Maui, Hawaii, was awarded $40.1 million to support a $56.1 million cargo yard expansion project. This investment addresses the increased demand for cargo storage and improved resilience following the 2023 Lahaina wildfires. The project includes upgrading the Pu‘unēnē Cargo Yard, developing a new 10-acre Ala Luina Cargo Yard, and enhancing terminal access and pedestrian safety.
