U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs announces $1.17 billion for veteran homelessness

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs has announced $1.17 billion in grants for fiscal year 2027 to support 680 organizations working to combat veteran homelessness. This funding follows a period in fiscal year 2025 where the VA housed 51,936 homeless veterans, the highest number in seven years.

The funding is divided into two primary programs:

$855 million will be allocated to the Supportive Services for Veteran Families (SSVF) program through one-year grants starting October 1, 2026. These funds will support case management, housing loss prevention, and rapid re-housing efforts for veterans and their families.

$318 million will be distributed through the Grant and Per Diem (GPD) program via three-year grants beginning October 1, 2026. This program focuses on transitional housing, transition-in-place services, and specialized housing for vulnerable groups, including women veterans, the elderly, the terminally ill, and those with chronic mental illness.
