US deploys 500 troops to Rio Grande Valley after Coast Guard shooting

The United States is deploying approximately 500 troops to the Rio Grande Valley in Texas following a shooting incident involving the Coast Guard. On September 26, Coast Guard Forces Rio Grande personnel conducting joint interdiction operations near Garceno, Texas, encountered gunfire originating from the Mexican side of the border. The Coast Guard reported that personnel returned fire, but no injuries or damage to assets were reported.

Troops are reportedly being transported via Chinook helicopters to various islands within the sector. The deployment follows increased tensions regarding cartel activity, including the use of drones to surveil federal agents. According to United States Northern Command, the Joint Task Force Southern Border used a high-energy laser counter-UAS system to down at least 11 cartel-operated drones between August and September.

The Coast Guard stated it is working closely with U.S. Border Patrol, the Department of War, and the Texas Military Department to secure the border and disrupt illicit activity. An investigation into the shooting incident remains ongoing.
