US designates Italian tech collective Autistici/Inventati as global terrorist
The United States Department of State and the Department of the Treasury have designated the Italian-based technology collective Autistici/Inventati as a Specially Designated Global Terrorist. The Trump administration is utilizing legal authority under Executive Order 13224, a measure stemming from post-9/11 counterterrorism policies, to implement these sanctions.
U.S. officials allege that the collective, which provides services such as encrypted communication, web hosting, and email, has materially assisted violent far-left groups and Antifa cells. The government claims these digital tools have been used to facilitate propaganda, recruitment, and the coordination of extremist activities. Additionally, authorities stated that the Kurdistan Workers' Party has also utilized the collective's services.
The designation triggers immediate financial sanctions, including the freezing of any assets held within the United States and prohibiting U.S. persons and entities from conducting transactions with the group. The Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) has issued notices to ensure financial institutions screen for the collective's identifiers.
Autistici/Inventati has rejected all allegations, describing itself as a movement for digital self-defense and free communication for activists. The collective maintains that its tools are intended for privacy and political protest rather than terrorism. Following the announcement, some services hosted by the collective, including the NoBlogs platform, experienced service interruptions.
