US Designates Mexican Drug Cartels as Terrorist Groups

The Trump administration has moved from campaign rhetoric to formal policy by labeling Mexican drug cartels as terrorist organizations, a shift that expands U.S. political, military and intelligence tools against them. Officials such as Stephen Miller have argued that the cartels can only be defeated with military force, and the Drug Enforcement Administration, together with U.S. prosecutors, has begun operations targeting the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) and other groups, including extradition requests for Mexican officials like former governor Rubén Rocha Moya.

Mexico has rejected any U.S. security operations on its soil, emphasizing national sovereignty and warning that such actions could heighten bilateral tensions. The new designation marks a significant change in how Washington treats organized crime in Mexico, moving it into the same strategic category as international terrorist groups.
