US DHS confirms deportation proceedings for Alexandre Ramagem
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has confirmed that Alexandre Ramagem, a former Brazilian federal deputy and former director of the Brazilian Intelligence Agency (Abin), is facing deportation proceedings due to irregular migratory status.
According to the DHS, Ramagem entered the United States on September 11, 2025, under a six-month permit. Authorities state he chose to remain in the country after his authorized period expired. While Ramagem’s legal team has argued that a pending political asylum request grants him legal status, a DHS spokesperson rejected this claim, noting that a pending application does not provide legal standing.
Ramagem is currently considered a fugitive by the Brazilian judiciary following a Supreme Federal Court (STF) conviction of 16 years for attempted coup d'état. This deportation process is separate from the formal extradition request submitted by the Brazilian government to the U.S. Department of State in December. Ramagem previously fled Brazil via the border with Guyana.
